John Chard on West Side Story

8/10 · May 9, 2020

What’s with all these youngsters acting like they're dodging bullets? Jerome Robbins and Robert Wise directed West Side Story, featuring Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer, Russ Tamblyn, Rita Moreno, George Chakiris, Simon Oakland, and Ned Glass. The score is by Leonard Bernstein (with lyrics by Stephen Sondheim), and Daniel L. Fapp was the cinematographer. The story takes place in a less prosperous section of Manhattan’s upper West Side, where "The Jets," a group of Polish-American teens, are at odds with “The Sharks,” a gang made up of Puerto Rican immigrants. Both groups want control of the neighborhood streets, and as tensions escalate, two young people—one from each gang—find themselves in love... A recipient of multiple Academy Awards, West Side Story is a musical reimagining of Romeo & Juliet. The film, set in 1950s New York amidst gang violence, bursts onto the screen with vibrant color and impressive dance sequences (Robbins). It’s become something for musical fans to celebrate, even though it isn't perfect; when it's good, it is truly exceptional. The romantic relationship between the members of opposing gangs—played by Wood and Beymer—is a weakness, as their dubbed vocals are subpar and their delivery feels awkward. The film’s overall quality suffers noticeably whenever this central plot element appears, extending the running time to an almost painful and unnecessary degree. Despite these issues, it remains an enjoyable experience. You can overlook its shortcomings when you're treated to songs like "America" (where Moreno is undoubtedly the standout performer) that really pull you into the scene. The choreography also has a quality akin to a ballet mixed with circus acts. If you appreciate musicals on film, this one is definitely worth watching. 8/10
