It’s hard to think of a film that more starkly illustrates humanity’s capacity for cruelty. The story centers around several children, visibly malnourished and so frightened of their Nazi captors that they go through degrading routines simply to survive each day; it seems as though this is the only existence they've ever known. Following the camp's liberation and subsequent abandonment, these youngsters find themselves together in an abandoned estate, where they forge a surprisingly capable unit while contending with a straightforward, visceral threat—an animal population now equally stripped of liberty and sustenance. While there are moments of bloodshed, it feels justified given the circumstances. The film’s title is somewhat deceptive; the “horror” presented isn't otherworldly at all – it's readily apparent. It would definitely be worthwhile to experience this on a large screen.
