Watching Tanner Cohen brought Adam Lambert to mind – I’d really like to see him take on the role of “Puck” – and this musical adaptation of Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" is certainly exuberant, even if it’s fun. Initially, I had a moment of hesitation, thinking, here we go again with another movie about gay teen struggles, but that wasn't really the case. He portrays a young man who's having a hard time at school and stumbles upon a magical spell causing all the other boys to fall for each other – and he manages to snag one himself, naturally. Before long, practically everyone in town is tangled up in his scheme. Those familiar with the play will know that “Puck” is among the most amusing characters in English literature, and Cohen does a commendable job of blending the fairy’s exasperation and mischievousness into a modern setting. Wendy Robie also delivers a solid performance as the drama teacher who possesses a touch of magic. The production feels slightly too staged for its budget; and while the singing isn't spectacular, it's ultimately a brave attempt by Tom Gustafson to handle a challenging undertaking. It’s definitely worth seeing – though you need to pay close attention to fully appreciate it.
