Reno on Wendy and Lucy

8/10 · May 26, 2015

Michelle Williams possesses a striking appearance and I generally enjoy her performances. However, my opinion of her shifted negatively after seeing her work in 'Take This Waltz'. While playing an unlikeable character can sometimes be successful—consider the Joker from Batman—portraying someone whose actions are morally questionable is upsetting when you like the actor. Following that film, I lost interest in her films, and she hasn't had many significant roles since then. Recently, I stumbled upon this movie, which turned out to be older than I realized, and after learning more about it, I became intrigued enough to watch it. It really helped fill a void left by the previous disappointment. This film shares similarities with 'Open Road' and 'Into the Wild' in how it portrays its central character. If you’ve already seen those films, or others like them, you’ll likely find this one quite intense. Wendy, a woman in her late twenties accompanied by her dog Lucy, embarks on a cross-country journey searching for a way to overcome the challenges of having a normal life and career. The idea is that you have to keep moving forward, regardless of the path, to see any hope, and that’s exactly what Wendy does here. > "You can't get an address without an address. > You can't get a job without a job." The movie begins in the middle of her trip, after her car has broken down. It doesn't explain anything about Wendy's past or what might happen after the events depicted in this film. The entire 80-minute narrative unfolds in an Oregon city, offering us just a brief glimpse into her life—a significant moment for her, though. The struggles she faces while repairing her car are portrayed simply but beautifully on screen. The story focuses on the bond between a person and their pet, similar to 'Marley & Me'. Also, as a young woman traveling alone, society isn’t always safe. It's a straightforward drama, but it contains a meaningful narrative, offers a lesson, presents a character worth studying, and provides an experience of life. It’s a journey of self-discovery that also explores how societal systems operate. The themes are solid, but in terms of setting a positive example, this movie is best suited for adults. It was among the best films released during its year. I can't help but recommend it to others, especially you. 8/10
