It was an acceptable film, though unlikely to revisit and difficult to suggest to others. While I appreciate Simon Helberg’s acting abilities, the character he portrays fails to elicit any real emotional connection. Similarly, Melanie Lynskey is a talented performer and undeniably attractive, but Maggie Grace's role and her character create a narrative disconnect; from his point of view, it’s unclear why this story exists at all, and he would be better off with Kelsey. I realize I’m shifting gears here, but the male character seems to represent nothing more than a collection of issues, while the female is leveraging past commitment as justification for enduring a draining relationship that offers minimal reward. A significant portion of the movie explores their shared fear of excessive self-protection and potential missteps. They appear to confirm these fears and ultimately arrive at an expected and predictable resolution. This shouldn't be considered a reveal, but it’s a transparently familiar “separation to explore other possibilities” storyline, complete with all the usual elements. I won’t claim that investing your time in this would be a regrettable decision, but I suspect there are more worthwhile films available.
