Reno on Welcome to Me

7/10 · Apr 24, 2016

It seems that for some people, being able to share their thoughts is more valuable than having wealth. Despite its undeservedly low rating, this turned out to be a worthwhile film. The ending could have been stronger, but otherwise, the movie was pleasant enough. It’s another smaller production featuring a truly impressive performance from Kristen Wiig. The narrative centers on a woman struggling with borderline personality disorder. After winning $80 million in a lottery, she chooses to create a television program where she discusses her personal experiences. As a consequence of what she says on air, she starts to alienate the people closest to her; the question is whether she can repair those relationships and how things will resolve. The storyline feels distinctive—it’s not something you encounter frequently in movies. Aside from Wiig's performance, the supporting actors were adequate, though it was disappointing to see a talented actress like Linda Cardellini in such a limited role. Those who dislike slower-moving stories might find this film just okay, but others will likely appreciate it more. I found it interesting that most critics gave it positive reviews compared to how audiences reacted. Nevertheless, I recommend it, especially for dedicated movie lovers—it’s worth checking out despite what you may have heard. 7/10
