At 2:17 am one night, seventeen children vanished from their homes, running into the street and disappearing into the darkness. All were students at Maybrook Elementary and members of Justine Gandy’s (Julia Garner) class. Alex Lilly (Cary Christopher), the only student who remained, has become noticeably quieter and more withdrawn. The parents of these missing children, including Archer Graff (Josh Brolin), suspect that Justine Gandy is either involved in their disappearance or possesses knowledge about their whereabouts. As the town desperately seeks answers, tensions escalate, and people begin to die in disturbing ways. Following his critically acclaimed film *Barbarian* in 2022, writer and director Zach Cregger has returned with *Weapons*, a production boasting a larger budget, prominent actors, and a more complex narrative that blends horror, drama, and comedy. The explanation for the children’s disappearances is fairly accessible if one looks it up online, but experiencing the mystery firsthand is preferable. A significant part of what makes *Weapons* engaging lies in navigating the unfolding enigma, which takes several unexpected and violent turns. The story unfolds through the viewpoints of five individuals: Justine, Archer, a police officer named Paul (Alden Ehrenreich) who has a complicated history with Justine, Alex, and a drug addict called James (Austin Abrams). While not as shocking or frightening as *Barbarian*, *Weapons* still contains moments of extreme gore and unexpected surprises. However, the most unsettling aspects stem from nightmares experienced by Justine and Archer. The feeling of unease is present, but knowing these are dreams and that the film doesn’t attempt to conceal this diminishes their impact somewhat. Everything in *Weapons* connects back to Alex’s aunt Gladys (Amy Madigan). Gladys, who is seriously ill, moves in with Alex and his parents. She wears a bright red wig, heavy red lipstick, and vividly colored clothing; were it not for her frail, wrinkled, and sickly appearance, she would resemble a clown. She appears within the dreams of Justine and Archer, and there’s a reason for this. The film is surprisingly humorous, with several genuinely funny moments throughout. James, in particular, serves as a comedic catalyst for Paul, and his audible reactions when caught on multiple occasions provide amusement. While he functions primarily as comic relief, he also happens to uncover the first substantial clue regarding what happened to the missing children. The film’s cinematography is noteworthy, with the camera frequently positioned behind the actors. This perspective emphasizes body language and creates a sense of either following or pursuing them. There's also a recurring motif involving doors—a specific door to a particular house that feels equally threatening whether it’s open or closed; from the outside, there’s no discernible difference, so the uncertainty of what lies beyond is constantly present. *Weapons* demonstrates Zach Cregger’s growth as a storyteller and director, delivering what could be considered the most broadly appealing finale of any film this year.
