The meaning behind the title **WEAPONS** becomes apparent before the end credits, but it seemed to me that Creggers was presenting a powerful and frightening demonstration of dominance. It’s raw, unrestrained power—all-consuming and absolute—that one person can have over others. And it's truly chilling. I am unsure what specific message Creggers intended, and I hope he embraces David Lynch’s approach of refusing to explain his films, even though I believe **BARBARIANS** (2022) attempts to address gentrification in a subtle way. For my part, I believe **WEAPONS** serves as a caution about how extreme beliefs can be internalized within seemingly civilized societies and how the ability to construct logical arguments based on facts can easily be abandoned in favor of group mentality. More directly, this is illustrated when one of the children realizes that his parents have lost their capacity for nurturing and instead submitted to the influence of a charismatic family member with dangerous ideas. Anyone who has experienced damaged relationships with their parents due to political views, constant news coverage, talk radio, or influences from either side of the spectrum may find this relatable—I certainly do. Even more troubling is the sense that individual thoughts, reason, and values are discarded for the ideological and immoral goals of a leader who finds pleasure in wielding power, especially over others. Am I clarifying things at all? However, power always has its limits – a point underscored by what happened to Romania’s Ceaușescu, Libya’s Gadaffi, Italy's Mussolini, Iraq's Hussein, and, of course, Rome’s Julius Caesar. Perhaps that is the underlying message of **WEAPONS**—that no matter how alluring power may be, there comes a point for every leader where those they control might "wake up" from their daze, unleashing an irreversible wave of destruction. Without question, Creggers' **WEAPONS** is a frightening and unpredictable experience that throws you around with unexpected twists as specific characters and events are explored. It’s horrifying, distressing, and occasionally humorous (though the laughter shared with the audience was definitely nervous). I never felt at ease while watching **WEAPONS**, due to how completely unpredictable it was. When Josh Brolin's character exclaimed "What the fuck!?", we all agreed. **WEAPONS** will likely mean different things to different people, and I’m eager to hear other perspectives. For now, though, this is undoubtedly Creggers’ finest work. Garner, Brolin, and Benedict Wong are exceptional in this unforgettable film.
