Dean on We Bury the Dead

6/10 · Apr 11, 2026

We Bury the Dead, released in 2026, proves itself to be an adequate survival thriller aiming to offer a more personal and realistic take on zombie stories. Taking place after a military incident in Tasmania, the film is bolstered by a noteworthy performance from Daisy Ridley, who convincingly conveys the anguish and sorrow of a woman looking for her husband. A particularly intriguing element lies in how the "undead" are presented—corpses brought back to life that initially move slowly and calmly but gradually become more hostile as they remain active. This, along with the unsettling sound effects—particularly the disturbing, crystalline noise of their teeth grinding—results in some truly suspenseful scenes. Director Zak Hilditch also succeeds in creating a convincing sense of scope despite the film's smaller budget. Still, it frequently seems like the movie is restraining itself. Although the idea of a "body retrieval unit" is original, the plot ultimately falls into well-worn genre patterns that are familiar territory. The story’s progression feels slow for its 94-minute length, as it focuses considerably on relationship issues and flashbacks which sometimes interrupt the flow. It's a respectable, competently crafted film that offers an acceptable experience for horror enthusiasts, but it doesn’t quite do enough to be considered exceptional.
