Reno on We Are Your Friends

4/10 · Jun 5, 2017

I’m baffled by Zac’s continued presence in movies; I can't recall seeing a performance so lacking. It seems he hasn't chosen projects wisely, and his films have either lacked substance or relied on flimsy ideas, with him consistently cast poorly. This could have been enjoyable if someone else had taken the lead role. The premise seemed promising—a story about an aspiring DJ striving for recognition. We see him sharing a home with friends, then facing an unexpected chance that brings complications he must overcome to achieve his musical goals. What happens next is what the movie aims to show. The pacing feels sluggish, and given its connection to music, it lacks vitality. It’s strangely lifeless. While we observe a DJ performing, the film's emphasis is on portraying his everyday existence. This marks a directorial debut for someone accustomed to documentaries, and I think he needs to address several issues before his next project, notably in casting and scriptwriting. Some viewers might find something appealing about it, but it didn’t work for me; it’s easily forgettable. _4/10_
