The story involves our unlucky pair being tasked with taking ownership papers for a gold mine to someone called "Mary" (played by Rosina Lawrence). Initially, things seem to be going smoothly; they reach the right place and haven’t misplaced the important documents. However, everything quickly falls apart when they meet “Mickey Finn” (James Finlayson). Stan can't resist speaking his mind, and when “Mickey” figures out that they don’t know what "Mary" looks like, he enlists the help of his friend “Lola” (Sharon Lynn) to pretend to be her. The deal is done, and they proceed onward – only to find themselves face-to-face with a friendly young woman who reveals she's the actual person meant to receive the inheritance, meaning these two will need to retrieve the document, along with a locket, from this dishonest couple. Adding to their troubles, an angry sheriff (Stanley Fields) wants them gone after they accidentally upset his wife (Vivien Oakland) during their stagecoach ride into “Brushwood Gulch”! It's questionable whether they’ll manage to untangle this mess. Danger isn't really the focus here, but there is a good amount of well-timed physical comedy from two performers whose comedic timing together works quite nicely. Finlayson also stands out, happily displaying the kind of villainy that used to get women tied up on train tracks. I do feel the film runs longer than it needs to and some situations are rather predictable; however, with a few upbeat songs – including “The Trail of the Lonesome Pine” – and some wonderfully confused expressions from Laurel, this provides an amusing look at the pioneering spirit, basic construction projects, and a healthy amount of gold-seeking avarice.
