The western genre gets a playful send-up with genuinely funny outcomes. Clocking in at just over an hour, this Laurel & Hardy film is practically non-stop laughter from start to finish, both visually and verbally. While it’s often remembered as the movie featuring the "Trail Of The Lonesome Pine" sequence, that scene is simply a component of a larger, silly adventure. Stan and Ollie are tasked with delivering a gold mine deed to Mary Roberts (Rosina Lawrence), but predictably find themselves caught up in some absurd situations when they're tricked by the mischievous pair of Mickey Finn (James Finlayson, wonderfully wicked) and Lola Marcel (Sharon Lynne) into giving the deed to them instead of its rightful owner. The story then follows Stan & Ollie’s frantic efforts to reclaim the document and get it to the real Mary after realizing they’ve been swindled. Prepare for a lot of laughs from a hole in Stan's shoe, see Ollie’s neck comically extended, witness what appears to be a flying mule, and enjoy the hilarious saloon chase later on. A charming dance number set to "At The Ball, That's All" is also included, contributing to the film’s simple yet effective humor. Ultimately, it’s comedy of the highest standard. 9/10
