A group of college students in Los Angeles receive invitations to a late-night screening of a wax museum situated within a manor owned by an enigmatic host with sinister intentions—played by David Warner. Among the attendees are Zach Galligan, Deborah Foreman, Michelle Johnson, Dana Ashbrook, and Micah Grant. “Waxwork,” released in 1988, blends horror and comedy as its characters unexpectedly find themselves transported into the scenes depicted by the wax figures; they then face werewolves, vampires, a torture chamber, mummies, zombies, among other things. The film’s atmosphere is initially unclear, but it settles into an enjoyable mix of horror elements. While leaning more toward amusement than genuine terror, the movie does provide at least one startling moment, and the werewolf, mummy, and zombie depictions are quite frightening. J. Kenneth Campbell also stands out in his portrayal of the French sadist, Marquis de Sade. A follow-up film, “Waxwork II: Lost in Time,” appeared four years afterward—something I haven’t had a chance to view yet.
