Waxwork presents a combination of creatures in a wax setting, the work of writer and director Anthony Hickox. The film includes Zach Galligan, Deborah Foreman, Michelle Johnson, David Warner, Dana Ashbrook, Miles O’Keefe, Patrick Macnee and John Rhys-Davies among its cast. Roger Bellon handled the music while Gerry Lively was responsible for cinematography. This is a kind of horror anthology assembled with a budget typical of television productions. The basic story involves several young adults who foolishly accept an invitation to tour a new wax museum that has appeared in town, and they do so at midnight. Afterward, various segments show members of the group being mysteriously moved into the environments of different displays – werewolf, vampire, etc. – only to become part of the exhibits themselves. Will the potential hero be able to resolve the situation? It’s an enjoyable tribute film that doesn't take itself seriously. The inclusion of familiar faces from horror movies is welcome, and the special effects are acceptable. Some of the younger actors deliver less-than-stellar performances, but while it's easy to overlook shortcomings in a low-budget production, it was still distracting to notice that the performers portraying the wax figures couldn’t remain motionless, and the set seemed unstable at one point. The photography also suffers from being overly hazy; Gerry Lively’s filters seem to be struggling to create a colorful atmosphere. Despite these issues, it provides an adequate distraction and feels like something made with genuine enthusiasm by someone who loves horror movies. It earns a 5/10 rating.
