This movie is just shockingly unremarkable; it's really hard to believe how badly it turned out. Seeing it felt like throwing money away. After experiencing its poor quality, I looked into what went wrong with its production and discovered that from the start, this was a project headed for failure. It seems it was poorly conceived, filmed in a location known to present weather-related challenges. While ambition is good, here it just led to escalating costs. To compound the problems, there were constant disagreements between Kevin Reynolds, the director, and Kevin Costner, the star. The most obvious of these conflicts may have occurred during editing, with both the actor and the studio pushing for a final cut that was simply weak and poorly assembled. Everything seemed designed to go wrong... I’ve since learned about extended versions of the film, but I haven't been able to locate a director’s cut that could fix things and deliver Reynold’s original vision. The version I watched ran roughly two hours long, and I really disliked it. The story is set in an apocalyptic future with vague explanations for how the entire world flooded, and there's this myth about land somewhere—though no one has ever confirmed its existence. Survivors live on atolls, artificial islands, and boats. The film doesn’t show us any storms or hurricanes that threaten these people, nor does it explain how they survived, or why nobody properly explores the world to find out what happened. There are many unanswered questions and inconsistencies, and you almost have to switch your brain off to enjoy it. The cast is largely carried by Kevin Costner; even those who aren’t fans of his acting will probably agree that he gives a decent performance and has enough charisma to handle the role, especially considering how difficult and unlikable his character can be. Dennis Hopper makes for an enjoyable villain, more comical than frightening. Jeanne Tripplehorn is fine and does what's needed. Technically, the film boasts impressive production values; you can see the money that was spent: the filming locations are well-chosen, despite creating practical difficulties during production. The cinematography takes advantage of every opportunity to make the movie visually appealing and stylish. The sets and costumes are exceptionally realistic, detailed, and obviously expensive. The action sequences were thoughtfully planned and executed, but they could have been much better if the film hadn’t been structured so poorly. Good special effects and a satisfactory soundtrack contribute to the overall impression of a truly forgettable film.
