Even in its original theatrical release, Waterworld delivers a thrilling aquatic adventure with impressive stunts—those jet-skis are fantastic—stunning sets like the floating atoll, and exciting action sequences, including an unsettling underwater city exploration. It’s not without flaws; the pacing is inconsistent, and the plot is somewhat thin. Nevertheless, Reynolds and Costner created a convincing world submerged by water. The cast delivers performances that acknowledge the film's tone. Costner’s Mariner is deliberately one-dimensional, brooding, and detached—fitting for a loner and mutant—contrasting sharply with Hopper’s over-the-top, satirical villain. Tripplehorn stands out in a largely male-dominated cast (another shortcoming), Michael Jeter provides comic relief as an anxious elder, and young Majorino is charming, softening the Mariner's cold demeanor. The definitive cut, Ulysses, showcases Reynolds' vision, making it a delight for fans. If intended as a serious commentary on environmental destruction, Waterworld falls short due to its reliance on familiar character tropes. However, the shared goal of survival among the inhabitants works well within the context of Reynolds’ imaginative futuristic setting and as a straightforward action movie pitting good against evil. Ultimately, the best way to experience Waterworld is to simply immerse yourself in its wave of aquatic adventure and heroism.
