I’ve developed an appreciation recently for older Japanese disaster films; they are genuinely entertaining, and the filmmakers pack them with so many elements—catering to diverse tastes and brimming with strange but captivating concepts. It seems like it might have been a wonderful era for filmmaking there! I found this one quite enjoyable, even though some things went over my head, such as the reason why the meteor became intensely hot as it neared Earth. I can grasp how tidal flooding could occur because of the Moon’s gravitational effects, but the impact on temperature... I guess that's just something you have to accept with a sense of fun when watching science-fiction movies from before humans went into space—you simply need to suspend your disbelief and enjoy it. And I am perfectly fine with that kind of viewing experience. I especially liked some of the creative ideas, like how one of the aliens changed its appearance to ensure the warning was heard so both planets could be saved, and the notion that when a global crisis arises, different nations and cultures—and even various planets—can come together and resolve things, suggesting that there’s still hope for civilization despite everything happening in 2016. Those kinds of thoughts are reassuring. This would pair nicely with 'Melancholia'.
