This film presents a familiar story of Western decline, drawing on the well-known events surrounding Earp, Holliday, and Tombstone. Blaisdell (Henry Fonda) is brought in by Warlock’s residents to deal with a troublesome group, while one former member of that gang decides to join forces as deputy sheriff, leading to some tension. Anthony Quinn portrays Blaisdell's dependable companion. “Warlock,” released in 1959, shares a serious and thoughtful tone with other Westerns from the late fifties and early sixties like “Man of the West.” The screenplay, adapted from Oakley Hall’s novel—a reimagining of the OK Corral story—makes it fairly easy to see parallels between Fonda and Quinn's characters and Abe McQuown’s gang with Earp, Holliday, and the Clanton/McLaury factions. The fact that Quinn’s character, Morgan, is inspired by Doc Holliday doesn’t offer enough support for claims of a hidden romantic element; Morgan was simply Blaisdell’s devoted and unforgiving partner, displaying affection similar to what one might find between soldiers or brothers. Two memorable women appear in the story: Dolores Michaels portrays Jessie Marlow, who could become involved with Blaisdell, while Dorothy Malone appears as Lily Dollar, an enigmatic figure from Blaisdell's history who becomes interested in the new deputy sheriff (Widmark). Filming took place both at 20th Century Fox Studios in Century City, California, and in Moab, Utah, close to Arches National Park, with the latter locations proving visually impressive. The film’s length is 2 hours and 2 minutes. GRADE: B+
