The film contains what I consider to be the finest battle sequence of the twentieth century, and it's matched closely by the combat portrayal in the 2016 adaptation of *War and Peace*. The musical score is also excellent; it really enhances the depiction of the Battle of Austerlitz. However, a questionable choice was made when the director, Sergei Bondarchuk, who was forty at the time, cast himself as a lead character. While his performance isn't terrible, I feel that a younger performer would have been more suitable for the part.
