Eric Portman, in my view, has generally been a reliable performer, but not one who often surprises with his acting. This film presents something of an exception, and he delivers a noteworthy performance as the offspring of a hangman whose sanity begins to unravel, leading him to become fixated on harming young women. The police, portrayed by Roland Culver alongside Stanley Holloway in a diverting role, are pursuing him, and when he becomes enamored with Dulcie Gary ("Anne"), he experiences unfamiliar hesitation regarding his actions. Lawrence Huntingdon has managed a respectable production featuring a capable ensemble cast adapted from an interesting play by Percy Robinson—and the final twenty minutes escalate into a genuinely thrilling sequence that critiques bureaucratic obstacles and those who prioritize self-preservation above all else. It’s definitely worth seeing; you could even catch Wilfred Hyde-White at Madame Tussaud's!
