It's hard to imagine a better example for showing young people how damaging greed can be than this film. Created during a period of intense stock market growth, it recounts the story of "Bud Fox" (Charlie Sheen), an inexperienced but driven individual who creates a plan to get rich quickly. This draws the attention of his exceptionally unscrupulous boss, "Gekko" (played wonderfully by Michael Douglas), who dismisses ethical considerations with contempt. What follows is a rapid education in how avarice, manipulation, some good fortune, and considerable audacity can transform someone from an ordinary person into someone living in a luxurious apartment, celebrating with champagne, and distancing themselves from former coworkers and their working-class father "Carl" (Martin Sheen). The young man begins to understand the situation when a scheme involving his father’s airline employer becomes central to “Gekko's” plans. With assistance from "Sir Larry Wildman," a believable Brit portrayed by Terence Stamp, he makes some adjustments. There is an impressive supporting cast; Oliver Stone’s writing and direction are fast-moving and sharply focused, and the narrative offers a realistic depiction of the competitive struggle as I have ever witnessed on film. The shoulder pads and costumes certainly look dated now that it's 1987, but the realities of a ruthless world remain just as important to expose today as they were back then.
