Ian Bannen’s character, Jackie, has a clever trick for getting his wife, Annie, to bring him ice cream – he pretends they’ve won the lottery! That establishes the feel of this gentle comedy as he finds out that someone in their village has actually won more than £6 million. Because it's such a small place, along with his friend Michael, Jackie starts trying to figure out who the lucky person is. However, no one appears to be spending any money. The mystery gets resolved when they realize Ned hasn’t been around for some time. A visit to his house reveals upsetting information but also presents them with an opening – assuming they can persuade the lottery representative. It brought to mind the original "Whisky Galore" because it shows a group of people presented with a chance to do something dishonest together, and you end up wanting them to succeed. The rhythm is nearly flawless; Bannen and Kelly have great chemistry, and there are some silly side stories that help keep things progressing well. I probably wouldn't use that phone box again, though!
