Anjelica Huston portrays Horcada, a woman who has been facilitating the passage of Jewish and French citizens over the Pyrenees into Spain. The appearance of a small but threatening Nazi unit in their village complicates this operation—and her support network is dwindling rapidly. This leads her to enlist the help of Jo, a young man usually occupied with tending sheep, who quickly becomes vital in guiding refugees toward safety. While the narrative itself isn’t entirely new, Noah Schnapp delivers an appealing performance and the script attempts to portray the German soldiers as individuals, primarily through the character of the corporal, played by Thomas Kretschmann. Tómas Lemarquis brings a quiet intensity to his role as their commander, and Jean Reno and Sadie Frost are part of a dependable ensemble that helps propel this well-photographed, though somewhat ordinary and occasionally lengthy, drama toward its predictable conclusion.
