It’s a fairly forgettable early Western about two cowboys—Ben Johnson and Harry Carey Jr.—who are tasked with escorting a Mormon group through the West. Along the way, they run into various people, including performers from a traveling medicine show featuring Joanne Dru ("Miss Denver"), then a rougher group under the direction of Charles Kemper ("Shiloh Clegg"). They're subsequently asked to visit a Navajo camp, which is when things take a downturn as the cowboys find themselves needing to safeguard the travelers from "Clegg’s" retribution. It feels like John Ford struggled with this rather lightweight mix of narratives; there’s an excess of musical numbers and not enough excitement, and it's missing something central—perhaps a performer like John Wayne or Henry Fonda—to provide some backbone and a sense of conviction. Even the music seems to wander without purpose. Ward Bond and Hank Worden attempt to maintain the feel of "Rio Grande," but ultimately it’s all just a little bland.
