The film centers on "Rourke" (Tommy Lee Jones), who’s in charge of handling emergencies when Los Angeles experiences unusual stress, as he investigates a growing problem that turns out to be an imminent volcanic eruption. He brings in "Dr. Barnes" (Anne Heche) to help prevent the city's destruction. While there are impressive special effects and the movie moves quickly from the start, the conclusion is disappointing. The science behind stopping the eruption—which involves utilizing subway tunnels, storm drains, and a significant amount of dynamite—is actually quite engaging; it’s the subplot about needing to rescue his daughter that I found troublesome. Perhaps those in positions like his shouldn't have children living nearby when they are responsible for such critical areas. There are definitely moments where things don’t seem realistic either – did construction companies mislead everyone for so long? And is demolition really as simple as it appears here? Despite these issues, it remains a fairly entertaining disaster film that highlights the hard work and dedication of emergency personnel in situations like this. However, much of the tension feels forced, and the acting isn’t particularly memorable.
