Reno on Voice from the Stone

6/10 · Sep 8, 2017

The narrative presents some challenges; I suspect not everyone grasped everything immediately, which likely contributed to its lower rating. The movie didn’t effectively clarify matters in a straightforward manner. It seems that appreciating it requires an ability to piece things together independently, by paying close attention to subtle cues like character actions, conversations, and dreamlike imagery. I'm unsure if the source material, the book, creates the same level of complexity for its readers. The film opens with a mother’s death occurring while her son listens to a promise not to speak until she returns—a very strange occurrence, given that no one else is present besides him. A new caregiver arrives with confidence in her ability to help him communicate, but gradually uncovers unsettling truths about the environment and its inhabitants. Unexplained events unfold; the film attempts to convey everything, but grasping the specifics proves difficult. Subsequently, a plot development occurs, followed by a return to normalcy as if nothing transpired. The performances were adequate; I chose to watch it partly because of Emilia Clarke. The setting was appealing, creating a distinct atmosphere—not your typical sunny Italian coastal location, but filmed in a misty, medieval-style house. Initially, the film reminded me of 'Miracle Worker,' then later of 'Hidden Face.' Neither comparison quite fit. It wasn’t until I researched it afterward that I realized there were no dream sequences at all, particularly during the final act; everything is actually real, which constitutes a significant plot twist. Perhaps multiple viewings are necessary, especially with some online research to clarify confusing points. The film shares elements of 'Skeleton Key' and 'Safe Haven.' I’ll refrain from elaborating further to avoid spoiling it for those who haven’t seen it yet. Simply watch it and form your own opinion about whether you enjoyed it, but try to understand what transpires at the conclusion first. I’ve adjusted my rating slightly; however, the film feels quite dated. Had it been released a few decades earlier, it might have been considered exceptional. There's still an audience for this type of movie, perhaps those with more traditional tastes. It’s really geared toward a specific niche. _5.5/10_
