John Bruno directed Virus, which Chuck Pfarrer and Dennis Feldman wrote. The film features Jamie Lee Curtis, William Baldwin, Donald Sutherland, Joanna Pacula, Marshall Bell, Sherman Augustus, Cliff Curtis, and Julio Oscar Mechoso. Joel McNeely composed the music, and David Eggby handled the cinematography. The story follows a crew from an American tugboat who go aboard a deserted Russian research ship with plans to claim salvage. They soon discover that something is on board—something not human—and it seems like it could be disastrous for everyone involved. Virus feels like a generic, expensive genre film; it’s poorly made and likely represents the nadir of Donald Sutherland's otherwise impressive career. The basic idea has been explored many times before, even just the year prior with "Deep Rising." But where “Deep Rising” had an enjoyable feel despite all the monster action, this one is unintentionally humorous because everything is taken so seriously. The characters are battling alien robot creatures, and one of them bears a striking resemblance to a robotic Brundlefly combined with Short Circuit’s Number 5. There's some slight interest in the storyline about the virus and its need for human body parts, but it ultimately appears weak and borrowed from superior genre films. The fast-paced ending, full of explosions and special effects, at least has good action choreography, though by that point it can’t redeem a derivative and disappointing movie that squanders a talented group of actors. It receives a 3/10 rating.
