The remarkable adaptability of how people understand what’s supposedly “God’s will” is truly something! "Viridiana" (Silvia Pinal), a young woman poised to take her final vows, is sent by the head of her order to visit her ailing uncle "Jaime" (Fernando Rey). She's unprepared for life outside the convent and unaware of how her beauty will impact the men she encounters. Predictably, desires are awakened, and following an unfortunate event that doesn’t entirely surprise her, she comes to realize a religious life isn’t possible within the walls of a convent. Instead, she establishes a shelter for those who are hungry and without homes in her community. However, she didn't anticipate "Jorge" (Francisco Rabal), her uncle’s handsome and appealing son, showing up. She soon finds herself caught in a challenging situation that will challenge both her faith and her sense of morality. At first glance, it might seem like just another romantic drama, but there is humor present, and Luis Buñuel pays close attention to creating a setting where we can observe the character who shares the film’s name evolve from a timid and thoughtful woman into someone more conscious of the complexities of life – for better or worse. It also offers a touching look at the place religion holds in small-town existence, as well as presenting stark contrasts between those with wealth and those without. Rey appears infrequently but makes an impact, and the connection between Pinal and Rabal is palpable, though understated—these performers contribute another layer to the unfolding narrative. Viewed now, it seems relatively mild, but in 1961 it likely caused a stir and remains worth seeing.
