The movie isn't so much about robbing a bank as it is an examination of life in a small American community. Stephen McNally plays "Harper," who comes to town with his associates – the unpleasant “Dill” (Lee Marvin) and J. Carrol Naish’s “Chapman” – and begins planning their robbery. The bank manager, "Harry" (Tommy Noonan), seems oblivious, occupied by some unusual nighttime pursuits. Similarly, Richard Egan portrays "Boyd," a wealthy but often inebriated man attempting to repair his marriage while the observant nurse "Elsie" (Sylvia Sidney) sees a chance for advancement. Meanwhile, Victor Mature's character, "Martin," who remained home during wartime to maintain copper production, wants to reassure his son, “Steve” (Billy Chapin), that there was nothing wrong with that decision. There’s some minor theft driven by money problems and the presence of a friendly Amish family headed by "Stadt" (Ernest Borgnine). These various storylines are presented efficiently as events lead to an ending that challenges "Martin's" resolve and the Amish community's beliefs when it comes to protecting themselves. The film maintains a brisk pace, includes plenty of scheming, avoids excessive romance, and features memorable acting from the cast. It’s worth seeing.
