"Viking Destiny," released in 2018, is a vibrant Norse adventure fantasy that stands out thanks to Anna Demetriou's performance. The film centers on the sole legitimate successor to a Scandinavian kingdom (played by Anna Demetriou), who is wrongly banished and forced to survive a harsh wilderness while plotting her return to claim her father’s throne. Despite its modest budget, "Viking Destiny" excels within its scope: it's an uncomplicated heroic fantasy with an engaging narrative, beautiful Irish scenery, striking cinematography and costumes, a fitting musical score, a capable ensemble cast, and a brisk pace—the end credits appear after 84 minutes. I’d guess the story unfolds during the Viking era, somewhere between 793 and 1066 AD. Anna Demetriou is both attractive and believable as the Viking princess; she makes for a genuinely compelling lead character. The film's production costs are in line with other similarly inexpensive movies like “The Viking Queen” (1967) and “The Lost Future” (2010), but it has the polished feel of contemporary sword-and-sandal television series—like "Vikings"—though with a more colorful and less somber tone. Still, there are some worthwhile observations to be made. If you enjoy films such as “Tristan + Isolde” (2006), “The Vikings” (1958), the previously mentioned “The Lost Future,” “Conan the Barbarian” (1982) or any of the Dungeons & Dragons movies, I’m confident you'll discover much to enjoy. One potential issue that might bother some viewers involves Norse Gods appearing to both the heroes and villains. However, it is presented as a subjective experience—only the individual in question can “see” these deities, whether Odin or Loki. Perhaps it’s best to accept this on the basis that people today are influenced by notions of God, the devil, and malevolent spirits—or whatever phrasing you prefer. A person's character dictates which entities they connect with. The movie has a running time of 1 hour, 29 minutes (91 minutes) and was filmed in Northern Ireland.
