My interest in this film, 'View From the Top' (2003), stemmed from its cast—Gwyneth Paltrow, Christina Applegate, Kelly Preston, and Mike Myers, among others—actors I initially encountered in films like ‘Sliding Doors,’ ‘Married... With Children,’ ‘Jerry Maguire,’ and the ‘Austin Powers’ series. Candice Bergen also caught my attention after seeing her in 'Gandhi.' I was looking for a project where these performers had taken on new roles. I feel that the initial description of the central character as a "little person, little dreams"—as stated by another reviewer—misses the mark; it seems to lack understanding. The protagonist possesses considerable inner drive and ambition; her circumstances and the attitudes of those around her are what appear limited. There’s an underlying theme present in this movie, which I believe relates to feminism. As the writer and director were both male, this perspective is interesting. What I'm about to discuss is something I haven’t encountered often—a sentiment expressed by a musician many years ago during a live performance. Female rights are fundamentally human rights, and feminism isn't solely focused on women; it concerns humanity as a whole. When viewing the film, one can choose to see each character simply as a person, rather than categorizing them by gender. I later learned that Gwyneth Paltrow herself considered this movie her worst ever. However, I think there was a misunderstanding in how characters were perceived through a male or female lens—a perception the movie doesn’t necessarily require. It's not essential to consider the gender of any character. To put it simply, half my ancestors were women and half were men, and that is perfectly acceptable to me. We are all people here for a brief time. Feminism isn’t about emphasizing women or advocating for preferential treatment; it aims to render anatomy and gender irrelevant. I acknowledge the historical dominance of males in leadership positions and employment sectors—a situation spanning centuries that has been deeply unfair and dehumanizing. I won't elaborate further on this sensitive topic. Regarding the film itself, it’s not particularly complex, a point I agree with the first reviewer on. However, it is enjoyable. I wasn’t pleased by how favorably capitalism was depicted, although the movie didn’t fully embrace that ideology; it retained a degree of humanity. Each character is portrayed as a human being, without distinction based on gender or sexual orientation. If any such distinctions were made, I believe they were unintentional. Ultimately, 'View From the Top' provided an entertaining experience—nothing extraordinary, but well-acted and pleasant to watch. It’s not something I would strongly recommend, nor should it be ignored. My purpose in writing this review is to offer a different viewpoint than what already exists on ‘The Movie Data Base (TMDB)’.
