James Woods portrays "Max," who manages a television station focused on adult programming. He’s consistently searching for fresh, shocking material when he discovers a short sequence of satellite imagery that really grabs his attention. During an appearance on a talk show, he encounters "Nicki" (Debbie Harry), whose sexual preferences involve unusual elements—something that excites both her and him while intensifying his drive to get this new, rather violent content for Channel 83. Also appearing on the program is "Prof. Oblivion" (Jack Creley), who predicts a future where television and video will supersede actual reality. These different storylines gradually connect as “Nicki” agrees to be part of this new venture called "Videodrome," forcing "Renn" to balance his worries about her well-being with his growing need to secure the program. The film is dreamlike and strange, but it manages to effectively depict fundamental aspects of human nature—sex, greed, desire, even suffering; and the visual effects (especially in the final fifteen minutes) likely had a significant impact at the time. It’s undeniably gritty—and that isn't inherently negative—but occasionally this rawness detracts from the more intriguing and thought-provoking elements of the story. The passage of time hasn’t been particularly favorable, as the special effects have lost much of their power and the performances are only passable. Despite this, it is worth seeing, although I doubt that feeling will last.
