Christian Bale delivers a compelling portrayal of Dick Cheney’s ascent, relying on both his acting talent and impressive prosthetics, though the film largely explores hypothetical scenarios. Despite showing little promise in school, he skillfully navigated and ultimately controlled the American political system, reaching the point where director Adam McKay suggests he effectively governed the United States as vice president. It's fascinating to see how this chain of events unfolds, beginning with the established network placing Donald Rumsfeldt (Steve Carell), known for his political acumen, in a position that could boost Cheney’s career. His wife, Lynne (Amy Adams), is equally driven – she shares her husband’s ambition and when George Bush Sr. wins election, Cheney's aptitude for leveraging government resources to promote himself becomes apparent. The arrival of George Bush Jr., seemingly inexperienced, seems to further benefit him; the 9/11 attacks and the subsequent invasion of Iraq are depicted as choices made by a shadow government utilizing unchecked "executive authority." While it lacks the sharp wit of an Aaron Sorkin screenplay, this is still a grimly focused, occasionally disheartening look at how fragile American democracy can be, where wealth translates into influence and incompetence isn't necessarily a disqualification. There are moments of humor interspersed with genuinely unsettling scenes—but throughout, Bale and Adams perform admirably. They create a formidable partnership that might even eclipse the Clintons’ power. The question of what is fact versus speculation is almost beside the point; American politics is a ruthless competition, much like the dynastic systems seen in many European monarchies.
