This movie feels like a playful imitation of films such as “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” “King Solomon’s Mines,” and “Firewalker,” with a dash of "Ghostbusters," though it doesn't quite measure up because many of its attempts at humor miss the mark, and the script could have been more focused, along with improved special effects. It's easy to see why audiences didn't embrace it in theaters. Despite that, it’s an enjoyable film from the eighties, packed with exciting escapades and striking scenery in the Andes mountains. The story involves a man and woman possessing remarkable psychic gifts—played by Lauper and Goldblum—who are tricked by a shady character (Peter Falk) into traveling to the Ecuadorian highlands on a quest for a hidden city and valuable treasure. Julian Sands appears as well. This was Cyndi Lauper’s first film role. Dan Aykroyd was initially considered for Jeff Goldblum's part, but he declined after encountering the musician, who he described as “unusual.” In her autobiography, Lauper mentioned that she and Jeff didn’t have a positive working relationship during filming. However, it’s clear that some of the actors had a good time, particularly Falk. The film would have benefited from stronger writing. The movie has a running time of 1 hour and 39 minutes and was filmed in Riverside, which is located about forty-five minutes east of Los Angeles, as well as in Ecuador (Cuenca and Azogues). Exterior shots were taken at 32 Washington Place in Manhattan, used to represent the Department of Paranormal Studies. GRADE: C+
