This is a gripping, unsettling thriller from a true cinematic great. The story centers on a former investigator who battles a fear of heights and becomes involved in the case of an old acquaintance’s wife. She may be experiencing possession by the spirit of her ancestor, who died by suicide years earlier. However, there's a much more sinister, practical explanation hidden just below the surface. James Stewart is exceptionally well-suited to play this troubled protagonist; he embodies intelligence and courage while also portraying a character who is unstable and occasionally controlling. He delivers a remarkable performance in what proves to be a challenging part. Barbara Bel Geddes provides excellent support as Stewart’s dependable friend, "Midge," bringing charm and warmth to her role. I understand that after *Vertigo* failed at the box office, Hitchcock put the blame on Stewart, suggesting he was too old for audiences and responsible for the film's poor showing. Apparently, Stewart requested a part in *North by Northwest*, but Hitchcock turned him down and instead cast Cary Grant, who was actually four years older than Stewart. However, according to a biography of Cary Grant by Pamela Trescott, Hitchcock’s decision came down to their successful partnership following the triumph of *To Catch a Thief*; he simply wanted to work with Grant again. It seems the role in *North by Northwest* had been intended for Grant from the very start. Regardless, *Vertigo* has earned its place as a film classic and it's well deserved. The cinematography is gorgeous, and the entire movie possesses an ethereal, dreamlike atmosphere that completely draws you in.
