The loss of their father during a climbing accident pushes siblings “Peter” (Chris O’Donnell) and “Annie” (Robin Tunney) to seek out increasingly risky climbs, culminating in an attempt on the Himalayan peak of K2. With wealthy individuals prepared to spend substantial sums for permits, there's potential for profit even if some climbers prioritize thrills over safety, jeopardizing everyone involved. One such expedition is led by “Vaughn” (Bill Paxton), but soon after their ascent begins, a storm hits and an avalanche forces them to seek refuge in a crevasse, sustaining injuries along the way. Naturally, brother “Peter” wants to organize a rescue mission, prompting him to enlist the help of experienced mountaineer “Wick” (Scott Glenn), who hesitantly agrees to lead a team to save those stranded from their frigid situation. With assistance from the Pakistani military (Roshan Seth), they are supplied with a significant amount of nitro glycerine and begin their dangerous climb. The film features some striking visual effects, and the cinematography showcasing the snow-covered peaks effectively conveys the volatile and unforgiving nature of the environment when disturbed by outsiders leaving behind debris and remains on its untouched slopes. The avalanches appear genuinely forceful, enhanced by the loud sound design that emphasizes the massive movement of snow and ice. However, the performances and writing are less successful. O’Donnell is pleasant to look at, but his acting isn't particularly memorable in this role; a sentiment that could be applied to most of the cast. Every time “Wick” appeared, I anticipated seeing David Carradine. The final fifteen minutes offer a boost in action, somewhat salvaging the film, though the overall narrative feels underdeveloped and burdened by unnecessary elements that would benefit from professional counseling rather than extreme altitude.
