Following the American Civil War, two hired guns are brought together in a tense partnership. "Trane" (Gary Cooper) is more polished than "Joe" (Burt Lancaster), who seems barely above a common criminal, but both men handle firearms skillfully – a trait that draws them to the attention of “Marquis” (Cesar Romero). He proposes they earn money by assisting Emperor Maximilian of Mexico (George Macready). After demonstrating their abilities with some precise shooting, they consent to escort the "Countess" (Denise Darcey) to Vera Cruz. She requires protection because the local populace, led by "Gen. Ramirez" (Morris Ankrum), is determined to oust this French ruler and create a republic. It's only when crossing a river that the men realize the countess’s weight is considerably more than her clothing would indicate, prompting them to consider alternative, potentially more profitable, goals for their trip. However, she has designs of her own and seems ready to manipulate either or both of these men to achieve what she wants. As they approach the garrison, deception abounds and events reach a climax – though it’s not obvious who will ultimately prevail. There's a strong rapport between Cooper and Lancaster, with the latter performing exceptionally well as an appealing figure you can’t quite rely on. The supporting cast is also solid, particularly Romero, and “Donnegan” (Ernest Borgnine), along with Jack Elam and Henry Brandon’s threatening "Capt. Danette." It manages to cram a great deal of seductive deception, disloyalty, and straightforward avarice into ninety brisk minutes, and although I found myself on the losing side at the ending, it functions effectively as a commentary on corruption mixed with romance.
