Venus feels like an endless slog toward a plot that fails to become engaging or frightening. This film from Spain attempts an adaptation of Lovecraft, but the result is disappointing. It utilizes a familiar contemporary narrative about poverty and crime, focusing on a struggling dancer and her family as they get caught up in the drug trade. The story is bleak and occupies most of the movie's runtime, which feels uninspired overall; it also includes a supernatural element that’s underwhelming, connected to a disturbing building where the characters live. The performances are adequate, but so many other aspects fall short that they become almost irrelevant. Ultimately, the film is undermined by its generic modern storyline and a nebulous supernatural subplot that arrives late in the proceedings and doesn't deliver enough.
