Venom represents another chance lost to create a truly excellent film centered on the symbiote anti-hero. Eddie Brock’s portrayal is particularly well done in this installment, thanks to Tom Hardy’s noteworthy acting. He essentially holds the whole movie together; the most enjoyable parts arise from the dynamic between Eddie and Venom. However, the film suffers significantly due to a predictable storyline, a slow and unengaging beginning, an excessive emphasis on unimportant side stories, and characters who lack depth. The editing is shockingly poor, which undermines any potential excitement in the action scenes. Problems during production ensured this would be a disappointing experience. Hopefully, future installments will fare better. Rating: C-
