It feels like this might have stretched on for too long, as the plot itself is noticeably underdeveloped. However, the connection between "Eddie" (Tom Hardy) and Venom continues to be enjoyable, generating some moments of amusement. The challenges they face extend beyond just being hunted by people; otherworldly beings are now after their distinctive "codex," intending to release a leader from confinement so he can cause chaos across the cosmos. During their journey, they cross paths with "Martin" (Rhys Ifans) and his family, hitching a ride in their VW camper-van while providing an off-key performance of some David Bowie songs. The story progresses towards a fairly foreseeable ending where humanity must make difficult decisions, seemingly unstoppable aliens are close to achieving victory, and the main characters have to contemplate making a final sacrifice. It’s familiar territory; although the visual effects are quite good, they aren't enough to carry it through as it moves forward in a rather mechanical fashion. There are occasional flashes of humor in the writing, and Hardy seems to be genuinely enjoying himself, but Chiwetel Ejiofor isn’t utilized nearly enough, and the film depends too much on repeated fight sequences to distinguish itself from the many comic-book movies released this year. It's adequately entertaining, though it doesn't compare favorably to the original film from 2018.
