RADIO1'S MR. MOVIE!-MAD AMI 🌠 on Venom: Let There Be Carnage

7/10 · Nov 10, 2021

This is a big, fun film, without question. However, the rating of "PG-13" or lower in many countries seems odd, especially considering Cletus’s brutal convenience store murder. A quick review; I saw the movie twice – once on October 20th and again on November 4th, 2021. Venom says, “Time to die!” as he and Eddie prepare for a full-blown confrontation with the terrifying Carnage. Eddie replies, "That’s the spirit!" Venom then states, “I mean us. We are going to die!” Here's what I liked about "Venom: Let There Be Carnage" (which I’ll refer to as 'V2'): First, there’s a lot of very entertaining humor throughout, from Eddie Brock’s amusing interactions with Venom to some tender and occasionally genuinely touching banter between Eddie, Venom, Anne Weying, and Dr. Dan Lewis. Second, Tom Hardy delivers an absolutely credible performance; it's difficult to emote for two distinct entities within one body, and he does so remarkably well. Third, the Mardi Gras-themed nightclub scene is laugh-out-loud hilarious. As someone who’s passionate about social justice, I especially appreciated the Antihero’s impassioned plea to stop cruelty against aliens – a glorious message advocating kindness toward immigrants. However, there are some concerns: The film contains extreme violence and thematic elements for a movie rated "PG-13" in at least fifteen countries. The story feels simplistic, and the runtime of 97 minutes is short and somewhat disappointing for a Marvel cinematic offering. This likely stems from Tom Hardy and Kelly Marcel lacking sufficient experience to fully enthrall an audience accustomed to phenomenal Marvel films. Tom, whom I admire as a performer, had only two writing credits prior to V2, while Kelly has three (counting individual TV series but not shorts). It’s also a massive missed opportunity that the film attempted to humanize the villain, Carnage, through his early childhood experiences, only to invalidate that moment shortly afterward. I'm certain that if the movie had been about 23 minutes longer – bringing it to a more typical two-hour runtime – I would have given it an easy score of 8 out of 10. Despite my reservations, this undeniably fun and idiosyncratic film is still worthy of 7.50 out of 10.
