The Louisiana bayous provide a striking backdrop for this movie, and the visuals are truly impressive; however, the plot relies too heavily on familiar slasher tropes. After an unusual incident in the swamp claims the life of a solitary man, indications suggest he might still be alive. Soon after, people begin to die. Agnes Bruckner, Jonathan Jackson, Laura Ramsey, and Rick Cramer appear in the cast. "Venom," released in 2005, comes from the director behind "I Know What You Did Last Summer," so viewers likely have some expectations going in. The film’s swampy settings and cinematography are exceptional, possibly making it the most visually appealing movie ever filmed in the Louisiana bayous. Bruckner, Jackson, and Cramer all deliver solid performances. The narrative begins promisingly, but the explanation involving Voodoo feels forced and predictable, with too many elements borrowed from other slasher films. The characters lack depth, which makes it hard to become invested in their fates; the tow truck driver stands out until a certain point. After that, the film devolves into a tiresome comic book-style horror movie, though there's one darkly humorous scene toward the end that is well executed. Agnes Bruckner is easily the most memorable of the female characters. The ingredients for an excellent swamp slasher are all present, but the script needed more creativity. Ultimately, it’s a visually stunning film that proves to be disappointingly ordinary and unmemorable.
