Special ops interrogation officer Jimmy Vickers, portrayed by Danny Dyer, is after serious retribution against the group responsible for violating and killing his parents. As he carries out his plan, he must stay one step ahead of both the police and his military superiors, who want their dangerous operative back. Slow justice is better than no justice at all. Let’s get straight to it: this is essentially a brutal revenge story. The only fresh element here is the way Jimmy Vickers carries out the killings—he's quite intense. This adherence to a familiar formula, a contemporary reworking of the Death Wish storyline, will likely prompt many critics to reach for their harshest words. Throw in Danny Dyer, an actor who seems to irritate so many people simply because of the types of entertainment he participates in, and it was clear that *Vendetta* wasn't going to receive positive reviews from everyone. This isn’t revenge; it’s a necessity. But a question arises: what did they anticipate? The promotional material stated Danny Dyer would enact bloody vengeance on his parents’ killers because the legal system fails! Do critics and moviegoers genuinely expect a sharp, intelligent commentary on lawlessness in Britain, or a sarcastic remark about the shortcomings of the justice system when going into a film like this—one that isn't pretending to be something it's not? Seriously. Writer and director Stephen Reynolds put some thought into his film; there are some powerful lines of dialogue, even if they get lost amidst the frequent violence, but it wasn’t intended for an intellectual audience. You’ll be demoted before you can say Katie Price is a virgin. *Vendetta* provides exactly what viewers want: a night out with beer and plenty of blood and brooding on screen. Dyer—a reportedly pleasant person in real life—delivers a solid performance as a son determined to get revenge, and he looks comfortable during the action sequences. Haider Zafar’s cinematography is excellent; the blues and golds are visually striking, and the supporting cast delivers good, reliable work. *Vendetta* has its fans, and it does so much so that a sequel is currently being made. That news will undoubtedly have those critics in their high-brow positions at *The Guardian* and *The Telegraph* lamenting over their shrimp salads. But they’ll likely go see the sequel expecting something completely different from what ordinary moviegoers know to expect. Death by cement! 7/10
