As the sixties drew to a close, "Brian Slade," portrayed by Jonathan Rhys Meyers, finds himself seemingly past his prime. His prospects appear bleak—until he’s invigorated by a “Curt Wild” (Ewan McGregor) performance and undergoes a transformation, much like a caterpillar becoming a butterfly, into "Maxwell Demon," a glam rock figure who garners widespread acclaim. However, the peak proves to be fleeting, ending abruptly. A decade later, journalist "Arthur Stuart" (Christian Bale) begins an inquiry into what transpired. Todd Haynes delivers a rather indulgent depiction in this film. The three principal actors—particularly Meyers—truly embody the spirit of the era, effectively portraying the atmosphere of sex, drugs, and rock and roll where restraint seems nonexistent. What doesn’t quite succeed are the characters themselves; instead, the narrative feels disjointed, and the initial concept gets lost amidst Haynes' apparent intention to present something that was once considered provocative but now holds less impact. There are echoes of David Bowie, Elton John, Iggy Pop—you can think of many others; yet, a sense of originality is lacking. Nevertheless, it’s entertaining, and the cast maintains a suitably chaotic feel throughout what felt like an extended two hours.
