The deliberate pacing pays off handsomely. Julian West, also known as Baron Nicolas de Gunzburg, portrays "Allan Gray," a traveler who finds himself at an isolated inn in a small village. After an elderly man enters his room and speaks of a woman’s death before leaving him a book, the protagonist begins investigating and stumbles upon a disturbing old house filled with unsettling—vampiric—activity; then the pursuit to uncover and eliminate the entity starts, hoping to prevent its curse from causing widespread destruction. It's quite different from how vampires are typically shown today; the story relies heavily on darkness and light, where the absence of illumination is particularly significant, and the "shadow" effects create a wonderfully sinister and spectral atmosphere. The plot isn’t especially strong, feeling somewhat disjointed at times, but that’s not really the main point—it's an adaptation of a classic tale, and Theyer prioritizes building suspense and dread over a flawless storyline. Jan Hieronimko is memorable as the local doctor who prepares poisons, while Sybille Schmitz shines as "Léone" (notably, neither are professional actors), contributing to what’s a strikingly atmospheric and frightening rendition of Le Fanu's novel, enhanced by Wolfgang Zeller’s refined piano score.
