The opening line alone—"I killed my own father, padre. I got no trouble killing you"—suggests something far worse than what this movie actually is. It’s surprising how much better *Vampires* holds up now than some of the criticism it received back in 1998. Stripped of the pressure surrounding John Carpenter's comeback, it turns out to be a genuinely entertaining and gory experience. James Woods carries the film as a vampire hunter working with the Vatican, clearly enjoying himself immensely in the role. He faces off against Valek (Thomas Ian Griffith), an exceptionally powerful vampire who seems limitless in his abilities. Daniel Baldwin and Sheryl Lee are also present throughout the violent events. Woods is effortlessly charismatic, delivering lines with a wryness and always ready with a weapon. His interactions with Tim Guinee's priest offer some of the film’s lighter moments. The technical aspects—the cinematography, fight sequences, editing, and way suspense is created—are all well-executed. Although the plot isn’t strong and there’s an undertone of sexism present, it's a worthwhile choice for those seeking a fun horror movie. It earns a solid 7/10.
