Bryan Singer’s "Valkyrie," released in 2008, recounts the factual events of the final German effort to eliminate Hitler during the summer of '44—a heroic undertaking despite being portrayed as a crime thriller. Tom Cruise portrays Colonel Claus Von Stauffenberg, though he is noticeably shorter than the real man. Still, his performance is dependable and the film manages to build some genuine tension. Even with knowledge of the plot’s ultimate failure, it's hard not to hope for those opposing him. Following the unsuccessful attempt, nearly 5000 Germans were later put to death for treason, though many weren’t directly involved in this particular plan. The movie is a worthwhile experience, both diverting and informative, demonstrating that numerous Germans were prepared to gamble everything to remove that dangerous person from power—and they came close. "Valkyrie" shares similarities with the 1976 film “The Eagle Has Landed,” so fans of that one will likely find something to enjoy here; I personally prefer the earlier movie, though. The film’s length is 2 hours and 1 minute, and filming took place in Germany, the Czech Republic, and California. Christopher McQuarrie and Nathan Alexander wrote the screenplay. Grade: B
