This straightforward slasher is a fun watch. The story unfolds near San Francisco, where five sixth-grade girls exclude a boy who asks one of them to dance, falsely claiming he attacked her. Thirteen years pass, and the now twenty-five-year-old women begin receiving disturbing valentines before meeting violent ends. The central question becomes: who is responsible for these killings and what’s their motive? "Valentine" (2001) comes from the same director as “Urban Legend” (1998), which should offer a decent indication of its style. Like “Urban Legend” and the much-praised “Scream” (1996), it incorporates elements of parody, although this aspect is executed more effectively here and genuinely funny—though it fades out considerably later on. While sharing little in common with those films, "Valentine" didn't perform well financially, but I find it preferable. It adheres to the conventions of a typical slasher film, certainly, but I was entertained from start to finish. The overall feel is comparable to “April Fool’s Day” (2008), only better in my opinion. The cast includes Marley Shelton as Kate, Jessica Capshaw as Dorothy, Katherine Heigl as Shelley, Jessica Cauffiel as Lily, Denise Richards as Paige and Hedy Burress as Ruthie. Male actors include David Boreanaz (Adam), Fulvio Cecere (Detective Vaugn) and Daniel Cosgrove (Campbell). The soundtrack is quite good, showcasing bands that were popular around the year 2000, such as Rob Zombie, Disturbed, Linkin Park, Deftones, among others. The movie has a running time of 1 hour, 36 minutes, and filming took place in Vancouver, British Columbia, and Riverview Hospital in Coquitlam. GRADE: B/B-
