It's clear that dismissing Burt Lancaster was a mistake. The film centers on Valdez, a Mexican American cavalry veteran who serves as a town deputy. He falls victim to a scheme orchestrated by local power “Tanner” (Jon Cypher), which leads him to inadvertently kill someone wrongly accused of murder. As a result, he seeks recompense for the pregnant widow of the deceased man. Treated with contempt and physical abuse, and essentially banished from the community, he needs time to recover before abducting Tanner’s daughter, “Susan” (Gay Erin), and then exacting his revenge – anyone who interferes will face consequences. This includes “Davis” (Richard Jordan), a character displaying cowardice, and "El Segundo" (Barton Heyman), Tanner's right-hand man, who surprisingly possesses a hidden sense of fairness. The events that follow are genuinely harsh, though not overtly violent, as vengeance has its opportunity to manifest in inventive and disturbing ways through the actions of a character driven to an impressive level of severity, which I found compelling. It isn’t particularly suspenseful, but Jordan delivers a good performance; Cypher is a satisfactory antagonist, and Lancaster, like a superior vintage (and Jimmy Stewart), simply improved with age within this type of story. There's minimal dialogue or romantic elements to distract from the plot, and this dependable, though somewhat foreseeable, film is simple enough to enjoy.
