Sandrine Bonnaire gives a notably strong performance in this character study focusing on a young woman drifting through the countryside, struggling to survive. The film begins with "Mona" already deceased, found by the side of a road; this establishes a lack of immediate danger but provides a helpful perspective for depicting her final couple of weeks. The narrative unfolds in segments as she meets various people—a shepherd, a potter, a charming Tunisian worker harvesting grapes, and notably, an elderly woman who enjoys letting loose—each encounter offering something new. The episodic structure allows for brief pauses between these experiences, and each time there's a sense that things might improve as she lives her life on a whim. Some individuals are kind to her, others are not, and this mix of reactions contributes effectively to the depiction of a resilient woman unsure of what she seeks or rejects. Does she desire stability and tranquility? Or does she flourish in chaos? It’s one of my favorite films by Varda; the visuals and overall feeling of liberation are enhanced by Bonnaire's performance and a group of interesting supporting players, some you’ll connect with and others perhaps not. The film leaves it up to the viewer to decide how truthfully it portrays rural existence and the attitudes of small communities, resulting in a drama that resonates on multiple levels.
